On Thursday, April 14, the Harrison County Republican Party hosted its 72nd annual Lincoln Day Dinner at Unity Chapel United Methodist Church in Ramsey.
Thanks to everyone that came out to enjoy dinner, support the Harrison County Republican Party, and hear from our speaker, Indiana State Treasurer and United States Senate candidate Richard Mourdock. Thanks also to the volunteers and sponsors that made the event possible, the folks that bid in the silent auctions, and to Mr. Mourdock for his remarks. The event could not have been such a great success without them.
Several individuals were honored with awards during the dinner.
Tom Bube, late Surveyor of Harrison County, was awarded with the County Chairman's Award and the State Chairman's Award. The awards were presented to his widow, Mary, on Sunday afternoon. Mary is currently at Floyd Memorial Hospital; we ask that you keep her in your prayers.
The Republican of the Year Award was given to Dale Rothrock for his work in last year's election. A second State Chairman's Award was given to former Judge of the Harrison Circuit Court and Prosecuting Attorney H. Lloyd "Tad" Whitis. A special award was given to Brad and Maegan DeVore, who are expecting a new Republican to join their family in May.
During the dinner, a straw poll was conducted for preferred candidates for president, governor, and U.S. Senate among the attendees. Approximately 95 people participated in the straw poll, just under two thirds of the 156 individuals in attendance.
The results of the straw poll were as follows:
President
Mitch Daniels - 21
Mike Huckabee - 18
Mitt Romney - 16
All others received 8 or less votes.
Governor
Mike Pence - 87
Jim Wallace - 6
United States Senate
Richard Mourdock - 80
Richard Lugar - 14
The straw poll was impromptu and was not advertised. No notice was given in advance that it was going to be taking place. The counting was observed by individuals from both the Lugar and Mourdock campaigns.
